Like Mother Theresa,
I hope and pray that I AM
“a pen in the hand of God
writing a love letter to the world”
Who inspires me and provides the details?
Who gives me the words and the connections?
Who guides me to the recipient and the method of delivery?
Who is the author of this love letter AND
the developer of the love language itself?
It is Spirit – The Divine and Holy One
known by so many names and images
ever present in the story of the world
and its diverse religions –
The golden thread of love that unifies us all
What form does this love letter take?
Certainly in words – both written and spoken
But the love letter takes many more forms:
It’s the kindness offered
The generosity shared
The radical hospitality extended
The Spirit of Peace that descends
The joy that delights
The mercy and forgiveness granted
The steady strength that is reliable
The honesty and vulnerability spoken in loving truth
It is my very essence – and yours…
It is the way we choose to show up in this world
the way we practice showing up in world
a fruit of our investment cultivating our own relationship with the Divine
Today, on this Christian Feast of Pentecost
I remember that Jesus’ followers were gathered
for the Jewish Feast of Pentecost –
a celebration of YHWH’s two-way communication with us
and the gift of a flexible structure on which the community was built
Today, I pray
that we may each know the Spirit’s love more intimately
and be transfigured to share it more abundantly
May each of us choose to be pens in the Holy One’s hands
writing love letters to those in our circles of love
and to this broken-hearted world
Amen. Ameen. Ashay. And so it is.
Prayerful Ponderings....
There are many ways to pray with poems.
Each begins with placing yourself in the Spirit's presence. Then consider::
Reading the poem three times, pausing in between each, noticing what touches you? what stirs you? what invites you to go deeper?
Notice which image in the poem touched you? Draw a picture of it - first-grade art skills are perfectly fine for praying!
Is there a song that comes to mind? if so, listen to it and sing along...
Read the poem aloud then sit in silence with an open heart - perhaps opening your hands to receive God's gift for you.
Share the poem with a friend - a true love letter!
Make a list of ways that you share God's love in this world.
Thank someone in your life for sharing God's love - even a text will make their day!
Write the poem in your own penmanship or print it. Put it in your pocket for the day. Notice it while you are walking around - or take a walk considering the message.
Write your own response to the poem - in poetry or another form.
What ways do you have for paying with poetry?
