From Passover to Easter: A Shared Story of Liberation

It’s very exciting that both Jews and Christians are celebrating holy days this week - a shared story of liberation, remembrance, and transformation. We are invited to slow down, gather in community, and encounter the Divine more deeply through prayer, ritual, and reflection,.

Passover - Pesach

Tonight, Jews begin the 7-day celebration of Passover, also called Pesach. The festival recollects how the angel of death passed over the Israelites homes as tenth plague. YHWH (Yahweh-G-d) led the people from slavery to freedom with the assistance of Moses and his siblings, Aaron and Miriam. The seven-day celebration begins with a Seder meal at sundown, which marks the start of a new day in the Jewish culture.

Christian Holy Week

The last meal that Jesus Christ celebrated was for Passover.  Christians recount Jesus’ Seder and call it “The Last Supper.” It is celebrated on Holy Thursday – three days preceding Easter. These 3-days are called “The Triduum” – Latin for 3-days. Christians recollect Jesus’ Last Supper, the events leading up to His death and then His miraculous resurrection.

The Triduum - 3 Days Leading to Easter

In case, you haven’t heard, the Triduum are my VERY FAVORITE days of the year.

Let’s Pray

Oh G-d –

You are known by so many names and images and there are so many ways to journey to you – thank you!

Thank you for all the ways you teach us and liberate.

Please give us the willingness and ability to quiet ourselves this holy week, to enter more deeply into the stories that our faith traditions share, and to gather in community to celebrate.

Through our observation, may we know your love more intimately and be transformed to share it more abundantly.

Amen. Ameen. Ashay and So it is.
