A Poem for Pentecost

Hearts on Fire in Haikus
Heneni - Here I’m
Pieces of the great I AM
Human and holy
Come Holy Spirit
Divine Spark of the Big Bang
Burning Bush ablaze
Water, wind and fire
Flame that led the Isr’lites
Show us Your way, Love
Tongues of Flame that fall
Fire and wind of Pentecost
Set our hearts on fire
Our hands are open
Ready to serve, touch, heal, free
Hands for Christ Alive
Our hearts are aflame
A reflection of Your Love
You’re alive in us
dancing
illuminating
transforming
liberating
heating
healing
reflecting
refining
refracting
uncontainable
unconsumable
lighting The Way
Oh come, Light of Love
Jesus illuminated
Love Personified
Amen. So be it.
I penned this poem while in seminary in response to reading a passage in the book Abounding in Kindness by Elizabeth Johnson. Elizabeth Johnson is an important Catholic feminist theologian who studies and teaches on God and the way divine love moves through creation. This Sunday is Pentecost, a celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and followers of Jesus, allowing them to go forth in service. May we remain open to that presence in our lives and in our world.
